Last week I wandered into Ammos to escape the cold rainy NYC weather. Decorated with light sandy stones, leather and other natural colors it had a warm Mediterranean feel. I drifted over to the bar area that has a comfortable sophisticated feel and was dimly lit by candles. Some high topped tables surrounded the rest of the bar area.
Upon settling in I was offered some assorted olives, freshly roasted almond and an innovative wine list featuring offerings from Greece and Italy. I opted for a glass of the sparkling Moschofilero “Ode Panos Brute” NV from Spiropoulis, Greece. It was crisp and dry with notes of blossom, rose petals and a good clean finish. It went fabulously with the olives and nuts while I checked out the tempting menu full of Mediterranean inspired dishes. Noticing others trying the signature house made spreads including kalamata chick pea, garlic almond, roasted pepper feta and eggplant with warm fresh pita I was torn with what to start with!
I decided on two appetizers. The spanakopita and kavourokeftes a crab cake bound with potato. The spanakopita for fans of this spinach feta creation was the most outstanding version I’ve tried to date. With a light filo crust, freshly sauteed spinach and a hint of Indian spice it left me wanting more. The crab cakes arrived on a long white china plate studded with a beet horseradish sauce and the freshest of micro greens. The sauce was an unusual but nice touch to this more than filling appetizer with a beautiful presentation. I paired these with a Greek Rose”Amyndeon” that had just enough body and fruit without overpowering the stellar flavors of these two offerings.
The best surprise of the evening was the bill! On Mondays and Fridays from 5-9 all checks are 50% off in the bar area. My total bill with two glasses of wine and both appetizers was 28.50 before tax and tip. The value for this is amazing and one of my best recession buster finds to date! I know I’ll be back to try some of the entrees including some very creative seafood preparations and the octopus that is a chef specialty.
